Hello folks, here’s Monday’s comic, as usual made possible by the support of my much appreciated Patrons! Thanks to some recent additions to the list of supporters, Molly is inching ever closer to the next goal which will result in one additional monday comic per month for a grand total of two! Even a dollar per *month* helps and gets you a swell Molly sticker, so please consider it if you enjoy what you read and watch.
Speaking of that word, “watch”…
For anyone who missed it, I launched a new video feature last week, Molly’s Voicemail. I already have begun production on the follow up, so I’ll be trying to make this a regular thing. I couldn’t be happier with the voice talent I have been fortunate enough to work with on this.
Another day, another comic only very much loosely based on reality. Those cheap voltage boosters Molly mentioned burn out quickly, so if you plan to build one of these homemade stun guns bear that in mind. To call them ramshackle is an understatement; they really are stupidly easy to make since the voltage booster is essentially the entire device. To make it functional all you really need is a nine volt battery and a momentary switch splitting one of the leads. That cheapness doesn’t stop it from being dangerous as hell though. Just don’t build it. If you must build it, it’s not a toy.
In case you missed it, here’s a video depicting the contents of Molly’s ignored voicemail box. Give it a look; you may enjoy it.
Next week is a three comic week starting Monday. See you then!
Modern JS stack development, if you’re thorough and utilize all of the automation/productivity tools, can require (pun intended) more time to build your sandbox than it would take to write your app. Granted, all you really need is a transpiler and module bundler to make your app production ready, but it’s one holy hell of a rabbit hole once you decide to include hot reloading or hot module replacement, type checking, linting, git hooks, process monitoring, unit testing, Immutability, server-side rendering, and so on. Simply managing your toolset can become a second full time job if you plan to keep current and build an app that scales.
Molly will need to make the case for this stack to a house of veteran Java developers in future installments of this comic. Clearly she’ll have no issues whatever and everything will go fine.
In other news, I’ve been mentioning for a while that I’ve been working on some other things. Here’s one of those things.
In a tribute of sorts to the Brothers Chaps, we get a peak into Molly’s ignored voicemail box. Does anyone actually use theirs?
Addison Peacock slays it as Mema Beans, which for Addison is, frankly, par for the course. She’s one of those hyper talented types who runs her own podcast and appears on others, and I was glad to have her voice Molly’s grandma.
Greg comes to life courtesy of Bryan, who does a lot of great voice work as well. I think he nailed the character. Stacy Thomas gave us a delightful Sam, Derek Bradley gave us Hank from NOC, and some voice-to-text algorithm is in there somewhere too. As always, Molly plays herself.
Today’s comic is at best mildly hyperbolic. Mental note: Make sure you warn Network operations if you plan to load test in this fashion. The more you know(tm).
Thanks for all your kind feedback over the last couple of weeks. I believe I’ve responded to every note; if not, I apologize. As far as I can tell, no replies bounced back, so I’m in the clear. I can always blame SMTP.
I really, really recommend The Alexandria Archives for a high quality source of podcastic audio enjoyment. Southern Eldritch horror themed, it’s a hybrid call in show and short story narration whoop-de-doo with spot on voice acting from a wide range of talented people in the podcasting community. Add it to your feed and thank me later.
Speaking of later, that’s when I’ll be back. Wednesday specifically.
Ahh, the rotating purgatorial dystopian nightmare that is bug duty. No one, not the 10x programmers or the interns are immune from its grasp. Hence the honey before the hatchet.
I’m actually rather proud of myself, in that I’m maintaining a steady lead on my publishing schedule. If I can keep this up I may actually be able to get other things done, for a short while anyhow. I say that to myself so frequently I may actually start believing it in a year or two.
Today Molly talks with an old friend of mine. If you were around and online looking at certain parts of the internet around the turn of the century, you might just recognize the old friend. He apparently hasn’t aged a day. That’s Mentats for you; must be all that Juice of Sapho.
Molly is back at work, and receives a warm welcome in the elevator from her thoughtful coworker. I’m happy to announce also that I will be comfortably two weeks ahead of my publish schedule as of the end of this week, which means I’m going to sleep for two weeks and have to do it all over again.
Molly herself is slowly taking over twitter duties. For comic related stuff I’ll be trying to shunt it over to that account, so follow it up if you are so inclined.
I’m now going to waste my completed comic lead on a very long nap. Be back Friday.
I’m really not sure why she ended up putting the video online. Must be a reflex.
What should be a reflex by now is to stop by Don’t Hit Save each Tuesday and Friday for fresh insightful yuks concerning technology, popular culture, development, and procrastination. You should be at the point now where you ask your coworker if they caught the latest Don’t Hit Save, as though it were part of the bi-weekly routine. If not, start the trend.
Molly is back on Twitter and will be slightly more active for the time being; I’m going to try to slowly transition off of my personal account for Beans related things if I can manage it. It’s easier and I’d honestly rather she start pulling her weight around here.
I’ll be back next Wednesday, and Molly will be back at work!
Molly has been spent a lot of time with Chuck and Dr. Elsker over the last year, so she’s gradually becoming slightly more resilient when it comes to failures, however minor or catastrophic. Something tells me that may be important later, but what do I know about it.
All I do know is I’m finally getting ahead of my publishing schedule again, and by next week I may be comfortably in the lead. What does this mean? Well, more time for other things I’ve begun but haven’t had a chance to complete, of course!
Molly is coming back on twitter again, after a little time off; she’ll be slowly taking over anything related to this project, or that’s what I’m trying to convince her to do. She can explain things better anyway.
Molly is nothing if not a great friend, or at the very least she’s conscious of repaying her debts. In any event, thus endeth another three comic week, which means I get to take a momentary opportunity to once again build up a sizable lead on my update schedule. The more I do that, the more time I have to wrap up other things; I’m currently on the home stretch on a really cool thing I’ve been wanting to share for a while.
